In 2023, the AJSQ launched its sports diplomacy initiative as a reflection of the evolving role that sport is playing in further fostering deep people to people ties between Australia and Japan. The launch event was held at the office of Clayton Utz and brought together panellists from rugby union, baseball and Olympians. One of the main speakers that evening was Caitlin Byrne of Griffith University, the lead author of Australia’s Sports Diplomacy initiative (supported by the federal government).
