It is an extra special Golden Week in Japan this year as the country celebrates a new Imperial Era.

Japan’s Heisei period which began on Sunday 8 January 1989, after the death of Emperor Hirohito and the accession of Crown Prince Akihito to the throne as the 125th Emperor of Japan, ended on Tuesday 30 April 2019.

The Reiwa Period began on 1 May 2019 with the accession of Crown Prince Naruhito to Japan’s Chrysanthemum throne as the 126th Emperor of Japan.

The enthronement ceremony is scheduled to take place on 22 October 2019.
