On 11 March 2011 the Great East Japan Earthquake struck the Tohoku Region in North East Honshu, the main island of Japan. Fukushima Prefecture, with a population of 1,865,694, was devastated by a triple disaster of earthquake tsunami and nuclear plant breakdown.
In commemorating the 10th anniversary of the disaster it is important that we remember, understand and support how the people of Fukushima are dealing with the renewal and reconstruction of their community.
Dr Ryuki Kassai is a founding Professor and Chair of the Department of Community and Family Medicine at Fukushima Medical University (FMU), Fukushima, Japan. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Japan Primary Care Association (JPCA) and acts as Senior Advisor of the JPCA.

About Fukushima and the disaster
Fukushima Prefecture, located in the Tohoku Region of Japan, comprises the 3rd largest area in Japan and is characterised by the grandeur of nature and a wide variety of special food products. The brand granted the top grade by the IWC (London) in the category of sake or rice wine in 2018 was from Fukushima Prefecture.
The 2011 earthquake off the Pacific coast of Tohoku, which occurred at 14:46 JST on March 11 2011 with the epicenter in the Sanriku offshore, was a magnitude 9.0 undersea megathrust earthquake, that is, the most powerful one on record. It was accompanied by large quakes marking an intensity of 7 and with big seismic sea waves (tsunamis) affecting wide areas. There were 4,097 fatalities which includes 2,268 disaster related deaths but those indirectly caused by the earthquake, that is, the physical toll resulting from living as evacuees, overwork.
