On 11th October the Embassy of Japan in Australia, the Consulate-General of Japan, Brisbane and the Japan Society of Cairns conducted a ceremonial event to acknowledge the 125th anniversary of the establishment of Japan’s first Consulate in Australia.
The event also celebrated the significance of Townsville as the site of the Japan’s first Consulate. Ambassador Shingo Yamagami opened the proceedings with a highly insightful speech.
This was followed by a panel discussions that focussed on:
- The economic opportunities between Japan, Townsville and North Queensland
- People-to-People ties between Japan and Queensland
AJS-Q Committee member Julie Yamamoto was invited to participate in the panel discussions and spoke about the important role that Japan has played in Queensland’s economic growth.
Insights and new stories emerged throughout the discussion. Thanks to events like this, the significance of Townsville in the bilateral relationships between Australia, Queensland and Japan will continue to be passed to the next generation and future leaders.
